Summer Collective Continues with June events

It is June and our apricot tree has blessed us with an abundance of fruit.  We may be one of the only galleries with fruit trees and chickens on the premises.  We have a strong connection with the cycles of the season and love to share the space with the community of art, poetry and music lovers.

Throughout the "Summer Collective" show, Tortuga will be open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 1-5pm.  On Saturdays, some artists will be on hand.

Coming up this month:

  • Game Night Thursday June 15 starting at 5:30pm
  • Concert with Hieronymous Bogs, Johnny Bell & Lady Uranium Sunday June 25 @ 7pm $10-20
  • Book Launch "Hers" sponsored by Jules Poetry Playhouse Tuesday June 27 @ 7pm

Please consider joining us for any event or come during our open hours to view the art.

Music at Tortuga in June & the Summer Collective Continues

Coming up on Friday June 2 is "Jessie & Nathan" playing their brand of folk music and heading for the Albuquerque Folk Festival on June 3.

The duo has traveled all over the world on the streets and stages sharing their unique sound. They frequent Mexico and Europe, as well as New Orleans.

A fusion of jazzy folk and blues on National Reso-Phonic guitars and accordion, with interesting interplay between female and male vocals, their trilingual performances are uplifting, fun, and with a message for people of all ages and cultures.

Cost is $8-15 (your choice).

March- Living Artifacts, Luna Project- all winding down

As the artifacts return to Tortuga, I am amazed at how quickly this month has passed by.  It has been full of beauty and art and lessons and experiences.  now the Artifacts return for one last look, a moment of gathering and connecting, a time a place to raise the awareness of each other and life.

Please consider coming to Tortuga on Wednesday March 29.  There will be a reception with the artists and workshop participants at 6pm.  The gallery will be open starting at noon for an earlier preview.

Living Artifacts are traveling

The Living Artifacts created by 17 women artists for Women & Creativity gathered at Tortuga to join the opening for Luna Project last Friday and are now traveling throughout the Albuquerque area.  Check for updates of locations here

Each artifact is an art playground inviting the viewer to touch, spin, write, reflect or add to the art. We hope you will purposefully wander the city to find the artifacts on their journeys.

On Wednesday March 29 all of the artifacts plus those created by the participants of the workshop will be back at Tortuga for a final night of art play.  You are invited to join the journey.

The Living Artifact Project is a sponsored event of Women & Creativity.  Check out all of the sponsored events at their website here.

Through Their Eyes: 12 Women Artists plus Living Artifacts

This Friday March 3, 2017 Tortuga is a virtual art playground.  17 Living Artifacts will be on hand for viewing and exploring.  The walls are filled with the beautiful and diverse art of the Luna Project women.

The Living Artifact Project includes a workshop this Saturday March 4th.  If you are interested in creating your own Living Artifact, check out the tab on this page and register to experience it first hand.

February fun continues...

This Wednesday, February 22 starting at 6pm, Tortuga along with good friend Selena Bequette will be hosting a "No Plastic Potluck".  At Tortuga events, we encourage the practice of washing dishes instead of using plastic once and then throwing it away. We never have bottled water, preferring instead to drink filtered water (which is on tap in the kitchen area.)  So this will be a gathering to explore and celebrate how to live in this plastic world and make conscious choices regarding packaging.

Special gift for all attendees.

Looking ahead-

Check out the tab, "Living Artifact Project 2017" for details about this featured event of the Women & Creativity series.

Wintertime schedule & Happy Solstice

In winter, turtles usually take a break and do some hibernating and so Tortuga will do a bit of this, coming out occasionally to check the forecast.

Here is what will be happening in December and January:

Game nights will happen on the third Thursday- that is December 15 and January 19 starting at 5:30pm.

There is a 'Call for Art' happening right now.  From now until January 8, we invite all artists to submit work for the first "Turtle Show" which will be on view during February 2017.  See the Turtle Show tab for more details.

Turtle Show will open with a variety of artists on February 3, 2017.  There will be no regular hours until then, so stay warm and hug your loves.

Jill & Pax

An addition to the January schedule is a benefit for the Women's March on Washington, NM.  There will be an art auction, food, music and community gathering in support of the women traveling to Washington DC.  See the EVENT tab for more info.

She recently returned from the frontlines in North Dakota.
